Svalbard Ice CapThe Austfonna ice cap on Nordaustlandet, Svalbard. One of the largest ice masses in the European Arctic, its calving front drops almost vertically into the sea. When I made this photograph, the water was extraordinarily still, carrying fragments of brash ice and small bergs that had recently broken away from the face. What struck me was the scale. The ice cap stretches right across the horizon, gently domed, with a single patch of exposed rock near
